My parents always told me to choose a career that would allow me to make money. They didn’t necessarily think this was in the creative industries, but now I study Advertising at University of the Arts London (UAL) and every day I am inspired to see teachers who have done both.
Going to UAL is really exciting as I am surrounded by people who are interested in the same field as me. I can also sign up to workshops to learn things I am not getting from my classes. I chose to study advertising as it is a creative and competitive subject. I was really inspired by Professor Jef Richards, who said, “Creativity without strategy is called art; creativity with strategy is called advertising.”
CHELSEA - ADVERTISING STUDENT
I believe that as long as you maintain a good work ethic, there is always a way. Even if it’s not the conventional one.
My favorite piece of advertising right now would be the Spotify "Dear person…” print campaign. I love advertising that is both funny and creative, speaking to the audience in a direct and engaging way while using the data to get an emotional connection. That campaign really made me laugh!
In five years I hope to be working as a junior creative at an advertising agency. I know that I will need support to get there, and I sometimes worry that I’m not good enough or that I don’t have the correct skills.
However, seeing others go after what they want and get it inspires me to keep trying! I believe that as long as you maintain a good work ethic, there is always a way. Even if it’s not the conventional one.
I’m hardworking and willing to put in the effort to get to where I want to go. If I could make one career wish, it would be for everyone who interviews me to give me a chance, and I will prove to them that they have made the right decision taking me on.
